For more information visit http://www.whiteribbonday.org.au/  HOUSING: The Housing Project Common Ground is happening in Australia. Common Ground is the brainchild of a New Yorker, Roseanne Haggerty. She persuaded the city council to hand her a derelict art deco building near Times Square and raised $US35 million from businesses to restore it. She created 400 basic self-contained units, mostly for the citys chronic homeless but with about a third reserved for workers. The magazine enables the vendors to earn their own income - they buy the magazine for $2.50 and sell it for $5. Vendors can be found at Myers corner and at the Howitt Street shopping strip. The Light Lounge, Wesley Hall, acts as the distributor and meeting place for vendors.
The Big Issue has also recently launched The Ballarat Street Socceroos. The program gives men and women of all ages and abilities an opportunity to play soccer every week.
