HOUSING - HOMELESSNESS: TIME is of the essence. For homeless Australians, the 105,000 on the Australian Bureau of Statistics count and likely thousands more sleeping rough, living in boarding houses, emergency accommodation or bumming a room from friends or relatives, those five words couldn be more profound. Its a time to think about the many Australians who do not have a place to call home — often through no fault of their own. The range and numbers of people hurt by the housing crisis are startling. THE BIG ISSUE: The Big Issue is a fortnightly independent current affairs and entertainment magazine sold on the street by homeless and other marginalised people. The magazine enables the vendors to earn their own income - they buy the magazine for $2.50 and sell it for $5. Vendors can be found at Myers corner and at the Howitt Street shopping strip. The Light Lounge, Wesley Hall, acts as the distributor and meeting place for vendors.
The Big Issue has also recently launched The Ballarat Street Socceroos. The program gives men and women of all ages and abilities an opportunity to play soccer every week.

LIFELINE BALLARAT: has started its bi-annual recruitment for telephone counsellors. Lifeline has been training volunteer telephone counsellors in Ballarat for over 36 years. Lifeline Ballarat is a registered Training organisation. Certificate 1V in Telephone Counselling is an additional option for those who complete the training. For more information Phone: 5332 1009
